Google for Startups Accelerator South Africa 2026 Opens Applications
Applications are now open for the Google for Startups Accelerator South Africa 2026, a three-month programme designed to support 15 growth-stage, AI-driven startups with up to R1 million in non-dilutive funding, Google AI tools, cloud infrastructure and expert mentorship.
The programme aims to help South African founders strengthen their products, address technical challenges and build the capabilities needed to scale their businesses.
Google said the initiative forms part of its broader commitment to supporting 50 South African startups between 2024 and 2028.
The programme follows an announcement by James Manyika, Google’s Senior Vice-President of Research, Labs, Technology and Society, at the Google Cloud Summit in Johannesburg.
Google Accelerator Offers R1 Million in Non-Dilutive Funding
Selected startups will receive up to R1 million in non-dilutive funding, allowing founders to access financial support without giving up equity in their companies.
The funding can help startups invest in areas such as hiring, product development, technology and business expansion.
By offering non-dilutive funding, the programme allows founders to retain full ownership of their businesses while accessing resources to support their growth.
Google said the funding is intended to give startups additional room to develop products, strengthen operations and accelerate expansion.
Startups Gain Access to Google AI and Cloud Technology
Participants in the Google for Startups Accelerator South Africa 2026 will also gain access to Google’s AI tools, cloud infrastructure and AI models.
The programme will provide selected founders with hands-on access to technologies including Gemini, Google’s family of artificial intelligence models.
For startups building AI-driven products, access to advanced AI and cloud infrastructure could help teams improve their products, test new ideas and accelerate development.
The programme is designed to combine technology access with technical guidance, helping founders address specific challenges that could limit their ability to scale.
Programme Prioritises South African-Led AI Startups
The accelerator focuses on South African talent and seeks to support startups developing functional, AI-driven products for local markets.
Google said it will prioritise South African-led startups, including historically disadvantaged person (HDP)-owned or controlled businesses.
The focus reflects an effort to support founders who understand the specific challenges and opportunities within South Africa’s market.
According to Google, local founders are often well positioned to develop solutions that address problems within their own communities and markets.
Founders Receive One-to-One Mentorship
The three-month hybrid programme will run from 28 September to 4 December 2026.
During the programme, founders will work directly with mentors and AI specialists to address real product, data and operational challenges.
The curriculum will cover areas including:
- Product roadmapping
- Growth strategy
- Goal-setting
- Technical development
- AI capabilities
- Product improvement
Participants will also join a network of more than 25 local accelerator alumni and gain access to Google’s wider global Accelerator community.
This combination of mentorship, technology and funding is designed to help startups strengthen their technical capabilities while developing strategies for sustainable growth.
Google Accelerator Africa Has Supported More Than 190 Startups
Since launching in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa has supported more than 190 startups across 17 African countries.
According to Google, companies supported through the programme have collectively raised more than $400 million, equivalent to about R4.3 billion, and created more than 3,500 jobs.
Google has also provided approximately $5 million in equity-free funding and product credits to startups through its support programmes.
The latest South Africa accelerator builds on that broader effort to strengthen Africa’s technology and startup ecosystem.
Madikane said the programme aims to support South African founders developing solutions for local markets while demonstrating that African-built AI products can compete globally.

Applications for the Google for Startups Accelerator South Africa 2026 close on 28 August 2026.
