Bluechip Technologies Acquires Nigerian Voice AI Startup YarnGPT to Expand AI Product Portfolio

Pan-African technology company Bluechip Technologies has acquired Nigerian voice artificial intelligence startup YarnGPT, marking a significant step in its strategy to build and own AI-powered products designed for African markets.

The announcement was made by Bluechip Technologies Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Kazeem Tewogbade during the company’s Data and AI Summit in Lagos. The news was welcomed by attendees at the event, which focused on the role of artificial intelligence in driving Africa’s digital transformation.

YarnGPT is a text-to-speech AI model developed by Saheed Azeez, a graduate of the University of Lagos. The platform can read text aloud in Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and several other Nigerian languages, making it one of the emerging AI solutions built specifically for local linguistic needs.

Azeez first gained recognition in 2023 after finishing as the runner-up in Bluechip Technologies’ AI hackathon. His startup has since attracted attention for creating voice technology tailored to African users rather than relying solely on models developed for Western languages.

Speaking at the summit, Tewogbade said the acquisition aligns with Bluechip’s long-term growth strategy and revealed that the company intends to continue acquiring products that complement its existing offerings. Its portfolio already includes platforms such as Cribro, BluPrime, and CashComplete, alongside other data and AI solutions.

Industry observers view the acquisition as more than a business transaction. It reflects the growing commercial potential of AI technologies built around African languages and local contexts, demonstrating that homegrown innovation can compete by solving region-specific challenges.

The summit featured discussions on the future of AI in Africa, with contributions from industry leaders including Rosanne Werner of XCelerate IQ, Fola Olatunji-David of Kickoff Africa, and Kola Aina of Ventures Platform. Speakers argued that Africa’s biggest opportunities lie in creating AI-native businesses and addressing infrastructure gaps rather than simply replicating global technology models.

Founded 18 years ago by Kazeem Tewogbade and Olumide Soyombo, Bluechip Technologies now operates in nine countries and serves more than 50 corporate clients across Africa. The acquisition of YarnGPT signals the company’s shift from primarily delivering AI-enabled services to building and owning proprietary AI products that can scale across the continent.
