National Identity Management Commission has renewed its commitment to building a stronger Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) system to improve governance, public service delivery, and national security across Nigeria.
The commission made this known during a digital conference held in Abuja with the theme, “Building Africa’s Digital Foundations Together.”
Speaking at the event, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said the agency is pushing forward Nigeria’s digital infrastructure plans through reforms, collaboration with government institutions, and the development of secure digital identity systems. She was represented at the conference by Mr. Sulaiman Falade, Head of Infrastructure Technology and Identity Databases at NIMC.
According to the commission, the National Identification Number (NIN) remains one of the most important parts of the country’s digital identity framework. NIMC explained that the NIN supports identity verification, digital authentication, and access to services in both the public and private sectors.
The agency linked the initiative to a Presidential directive issued on April 5, 2024, which instructed Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to fully integrate the NIN into identity verification, biometric authentication, and digital data collection processes.
NIMC also highlighted the role of the National Public Key Infrastructure (nPKI), a system designed to improve trust and security in online transactions and digital communications. The commission said the infrastructure would help strengthen data protection and support safer digital interactions across the country.
According to NIMC, the wider DPI strategy is intended to improve transparency, accountability, and interoperability within Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem. It is also expected to make access to government services faster and more efficient for citizens.
The commission said it remains focused on using technology and innovation to build a more secure and reliable digital identity system for Nigeria. It also called on public and private sector stakeholders to support the continued implementation of digital identity projects aimed at improving service delivery nationwide.
