South African talent marketplace OfferZen gets $5.2M to deepen European expansion

South African talent marketplace, OfferZen, is one of those who benefitted from the growing global demand for tech workers. It has been confirmed to have raised $5.07 million in its series A funding from a South African investment company, Base Capital.

OfferZen was founded in 2015 by Philip JoubertMalan Joubert and Brett Jones

Being a tech talent marketplace, OfferZen gives room for software developers and engineers to signup as candidates and are later curated by OfferZen and suggested to various companies. Developers are given the privilege to be live on the marketplace for a period of $ weeks and are guaranteed by OfferZen to be contacted by various companies.

As a South African talent marketplace, OfferZen has operated solely in South Africa for a period of 4 and half years until April 2020 then expanded its tentacles to the Netherlands after acquiring TryCatch an Amsterdam-based recruitment tech startup.

According to Philip Joubert the CEO OfferZen, over a thousand companies as well as 100,000 software developers make use of the tech talent marketplace. Most of its users from both ends of the marketplace are South Africa-based, the Netherlands, and some parts of Europe such as the U.K. and Germany, which are prominent hubs for global talent.

Expansion to the Netherlands and some servicing parts of Europe contributed greatly to the growth experienced by OfferZen in the second half of the year, with a 29% increase in placements between Q3 and Q4 alone. In a statement released by the CEO, he stated that

“ Due to Covid Pandemic, Tech hiring was at a standstill in the first half of 2020. Ever since then, we have however seen a huge acceleration in the marketplace as companies are now raising more capital than they did before the pandemic, investing more in technology and hiring much faster subsequently,”.

“Octamile, Africa’s digital insurtech startup, comes out of stealth mode

Octamile, Africa’s digital insurtech company from Nigeria that shields insurance and non-insurance businesses from financial loss by protecting African consumers, Octamile, has scaled stealth mode with about $500,000 in pre-seed funds raised.

Octamile digital solution founded by Gbenro Dara helps non-insurance businesses by offering insurance features for their pre-existing goods or products. It empowers insurance providers with the required technology and data to scale up customer experience and revenue at a much lesser administrative cost.

Octamile, Africa’s digital Insurtech startup, has been in stealth mode for a while now before successfully launching out of it during the recent pre-seed funding round. The round, which was led by EchoVC in partnership with Fiat Ventures, Kesho VC, Trade X, Verraki Partners, Dale Mathias, Kyle Daley, and other local and international angels.

Speaking about the launch, Gbenro Dara an Insurance degree holder from the University of Lagos is a distinguished member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, the founder, and CEO of Octamile who has also in the last decade served in various tech startups such as Cheki, Jumia, Efritin.com, Olist by Opera software, My AutoGenius, and Hotels.ng stated that

“Insurance is a sector that possesses the power to elevate the economy, but only about five (5) of 100 Africans have any form of insurance protection. The industry has lagged in the use of technology to deliver better products and services.”

“Our team has identified key areas where we can further add value and support the growth of the Insurance ecosystem in Africa with data and technology by collaborating with traditional insurance businesses and non-insurance businesses.”

Describing the digital insurtech company as the “operating system infrastructure for digital insurance in Africa”, Octamile offers a wide range of benefits to the ecosystem such as digital claims, improved risk assessment, as well as embedded insurance APIs.

“Our goal over the next months will be to work closely with our partners, which include AXAMansard and FirstBank then onboard the dozens of insurers and startups on the waitlist ready to leverage on the power of our solutions,” said Dara.

ChainEx, SA Crypto Platform Launches Stablecoin CZAR

0

ChainEx, a South African crypto exchange platform has released its own stablecoin named CZAR. CZAR is “pegged” on the SA Rand —meaning its value is tied to the Rand— and built on a binance-powered blockchain.

Stablecoins provide more stability to customers than regular crypto coins due to the fact that they are attached to a traditional currency; thereby volatility in trade is reduced. Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum are not stablecoins and so their prices are highly unpredictable.

CZAR enables users to make transactions with regular currency on the blockchain. The tokens will promote the utilization of SA Rand digitally.

Making a statement on this, Michael Bernardt, Head of Community ChainEx, said CZAR is a “stablecoin similar to USDT and pegged on the South African Rand rather than the US dollar. Stablecoins help to avoid crypto volatility and as a bridge to enter the DeFi space.”

CZAR tokens can be used for the following, according to ChainEx: make payments to people in the same region as well as beyond the region; store assets to avoid price fluctuations; trade in DeFi markets and also make money during liquidity pools on DeFi.

In 2020, ChainEx launched a deposit feature that allowed users to perform instant trade and further opened up access to South African exchange markets to traders from other countries, on the platform.

ChainEx was founded in 2018 to provide South Africans with the accessibility to trade cryptocurrencies in return for SA Rands. ChainEx can be regarded as a South African “centralized cryptocurrency exchange.”

Unesco and Huawei Launches Digital Education System in Africa

UNESCO and Huawei have begun the implementation phase of the Technology-Enabled Open Schools for All (TeOSS) project in a three-year online learning program across Ghana, Egypt, and Ethiopia.

In keeping up with the UN SDG4, TeOSS will serve as a foundation for driving the digital transformation of the education sector. TeOSS is committed to withstanding global disruptions such as COVID-19 by assisting the three UNESCO member nations in developing a solid education system. The implementations phase will inspect the project outcome and adjust where necessary to create strategies for launching out at a national level and establishing the project in other African nations.

The TeOSS project will connect schools, develop online platforms to connect school and home learning, create digital curricula that can be accessed remotely and without supervision, and provide online training for students and teachers on how to use online tools. The project will help students navigate the virtual world of e-learning confidently and afford teachers the skills required for handling old and new digital tools for better learning outcomes.

“The project is designed to test schooling models that can respond immediately to new challenges imposed by the pandemic and also leverage technology to help enable the development of future models of schooling,” said Stefania Giannini, Assistant Director-General for Education, UNESCO.

The TeOSS project in partnership with the governments of Ghana, Ethiopia, and Egypt is built to fulfill the specific local needs of these countries.

A National Distance Learning Centre will be set up in Egypt for educators all over the countries to enable them to receive professional development. Structured ICT skills have been created for students and teachers in K12 schools. Teachers from primary and junior high schools, as well as professionals in the development of digital courseware, will be trained.

“Egypt’s new education system 2.0 emphasizes the integration of technology into the educational process with multiple digital learning resources and learning platforms to ensure education for all and achieve educational quality and access,” said Dr. Reda Hegazy, Deputy Minister for Teachers’ Affairs for the Ministry of Education and Technical Education in Egypt.”

In Ethiopia, the project will aim at building a Learning Management System integrated with a Teacher Training Platform, and ICT infrastructure to link pilot schools.

“Ethiopia understands very well the need for ICT and digitalization in our future schooling system to deliver quality and inclusive education equitably for all, without any disruptions, as stipulated in our new education sector roadmap,” said Dr. Fanta Mandefiro from the State of Ministry of Education of Ethiopia.

The TeOSS project in Ghana will develop digital content for all disciplines and offer training for teachers and students in primary and secondary schools. The initiative will also create an e-repository, which teachers will utilize to publish content; learners will be able to access the online and offline with little or no supervision.

The Minister of Education for Ghana, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum said he is pleased to note that this UNESCO-HUAWEI collaboration builds on previously established partnerships and collaborative efforts with our national institutions, particularly CENDLOS, which is the institution mandated by the Ghanaian government to facilitate the integration of ICT across the education system.

The TeOSS project is in line with the Tech4Edu domain of Huawei’s digital inclusion scheme TECH4ALL. The scheme promotes quality and equity in education with technology.

“The digital platforms that Technology-enabled Open Schools for All will create mean that learning never needs to stop – whatever the future holds,” said Kevin Zhang, CMO of ICT Infrastructure for Huawei.

Digitalizing education and facilitating equal and inclusive access to lifelong learning opportunities for everybody is the goal of the TeOSS project and the collaboration that has endorsed it.

The Minister announced that the project would receive support from the Helping Africa Foundation of the United States of America. He stated that works on the ultra-modern ICT facility would start early next year. The Tourism Minister’s pledge is motivated by his desire to help prepare students for the job market by providing them with the necessary knowledge and ICT skills.

Dr. Awal, who stood in for the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced, during the ceremony, that the student who emerges as the overall best student would receive a scholarship package.

Gijima Receives the Huawei IT Partner of the Year Award

Gijima receives the Huawei IT Partner of the Year award. The South African largest black-owned and level one broad-based black economic empowerment ICT provider, and systems integrator, was recognized by Huawei as a significant contributor in the ICT sector.

“It is very special to be the recipient of such a prestigious award and especially from a company such as Huawei, which has invested into local skills over the past decade,” said Sylvester Samuel, chief executive of Gijima Holdings South Africa.

Huawei recognizes exceptional feats by ICT providers who are in partnership with them. Huawei’s partnership with Gijima is one of the long-lasting partnerships which has exceeded a decade.

Huawei awards incredible performance among its partners. Chen Wei, director of solution sales and marketing for Huawei South Africa, said Huawei searches for three qualities in a Huawei IT Partner of the Year.

The first quality is the ability of a company to work with Huawei in the IT sphere to jointly create or break new ground in businesses in the IT field. Second, the company must have worked with Huawei for a long time to develop calculated partnerships in the South African ecosystem, with excellent IT integration capacity. Third, and the vital part, the company must be a key player in transforming IT in Africa.

Wei said Gajima bagged the award because of its unwavering focus on the IT field and its implementation of the Cloud First strategic direction, which aligns with Huawei’s strategic direction sets it apart from other competitors.

“Having a partner who shares the same strategic direction as Huawei proves to bring great value to South Africa,” Wei said.

“Now as we are exiting the Covid 19 pandemic we are finding that it is extremely difficult to get our space in the industry, but being 100% black-owned we are focusing on developing skills locally.

“We are focusing on local innovation and the partnership with Huawei just takes us to a new level. It adds so much value to a company of Gijima’s stature,” Samuel explained the challenges faced by the company as a black-owned ICT provider coupled with the impact of COVID 19.

Wei said, “We further want to consolidate co-operation in the IT field and develop multi-field and multi-industry ICT infrastructure construction plans in South Africa.”

Samuel described the partnership with Huawei as a “fusion of Chinese and South African culture.” He went on to share plans for this partnership.

“We want to focus on the strategy within the innovation topics of the ICT solution such as safe and smart cities and have a greater focus on cloud.

“We want to focus on building an enterprise business with Huawei so that we can have a converged platform for government and local private customers,” Samuel said.
