African electric mobility company Spiro has appointed Anant Badjatya as its new Group Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership change as the company prepares for its next stage of expansion across the continent.
The appointment comes shortly after Spiro secured $215 million in financing, one of the largest investments ever made in Africa’s electric mobility sector. The funding is expected to support the company’s efforts to expand its clean transportation services and strengthen its presence in key African markets.
Badjatya brings more than 20 years of leadership experience across India, the Middle East and Africa. Throughout his career, he has worked in the electric mobility, energy and industrial sectors, helping businesses grow and scale their operations.
In his new position, he will lead Spiro’s growth strategy across several business areas, including battery-swapping infrastructure, vehicle leasing, logistics services, energy solutions and vehicle manufacturing.
Before joining Spiro, Badjatya served as Chief Executive Officer of Indofast Energy, a joint venture between IndianOil and SUN Mobility. During his time there, he oversaw the development of one of India’s largest battery-swapping networks, with more than 1,800 stations serving nearly 90,000 vehicles every day.
Industry observers believe this experience could prove valuable as Spiro works to expand its own battery-swapping network and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles across Africa.
Commenting on the appointment, Gagan Gupta, founder and chairman of Spiro, said the company is entering an important phase of growth as it continues its mission to provide clean, affordable and accessible transportation solutions across the continent.
He said Badjatya would help strengthen the company’s strategic direction and support its expansion across mobility, energy and technology sectors.
Badjatya described Africa as one of the world’s most promising markets for electric mobility. He noted that Spiro has already built a strong foundation and is well positioned to help accelerate the transition to cleaner transport solutions throughout the continent.
Expanding Africa’s Electric Mobility Network
The leadership change reflects Spiro’s broader strategy to increase the adoption of electric transportation by expanding its battery-swapping infrastructure, deploying more electric vehicles and strengthening its integrated mobility and energy ecosystem.
With fresh investment, growing operations and new leadership in place, Spiro is aiming to play a larger role in shaping the future of sustainable transportation across Africa.
