MTN Group has launched a new digital entertainment platform called MTN One TV, expanding its services beyond connectivity and mobile payments into the fast-growing streaming market.
The new platform is designed to make digital entertainment more accessible across Africa by offering flexible viewing and payment options that cater to different customer needs and spending habits.
According to MTN, users will be able to access content through a variety of models depending on their market. These include free-to-watch content, advertising-supported viewing, pay-as-you-watch options, and traditional subscription packages.
The telecoms giant said the platform combines local content, live television channels, international programming, and market-specific entertainment offerings tailored to how customers across Africa consume digital media.
A key feature of MTN One TV is its flexible payment system. Depending on the country, users may be able to pay for content using airtime, mobile money, or other locally available payment methods. This approach could help expand access to streaming services for millions of Africans who do not have bank accounts or credit cards.
Selorm Adadevoh said entertainment is becoming an increasingly important entry point into the digital economy.
He explained that MTN is using its telecommunications network, fintech services, and digital capabilities to make content more accessible while creating opportunities for Africa’s creative and digital industries.
The company also said MTN One TV will provide new opportunities for African content creators, broadcasters, advertisers, and other ecosystem partners. However, it has not yet disclosed the content providers or strategic partners involved in the platform.
MTN believes the service can help improve content discovery, increase audience reach, and support the growth of Africa’s digital entertainment sector by bringing a wide range of content under a single platform.
Expanding Beyond Telecommunications
The launch forms part of MTN’s broader strategy to evolve beyond traditional telecommunications services by integrating connectivity, entertainment, financial services, and digital solutions.
The South African version of the platform currently advertises more than 1,000 hours of content, including movies, television series, music, documentaries, and children’s programming.
Users can register for free using a local mobile number, although only MTN subscribers are currently eligible to purchase paid services on the platform. The company has not yet announced pricing details for subscriptions or pay-as-you-watch content.
Gradual Rollout Across Markets
MTN said the service will be introduced gradually across its markets through a phased rollout that takes into account local customer needs, existing digital services, and partnership opportunities.
Over time, the company plans to expand the platform by adding more content partnerships and video services under the MTN One TV brand.
The launch reflects growing competition in Africa’s digital entertainment sector as telecom operators increasingly seek new revenue streams beyond voice and data services.
With operations spanning 16 countries across Africa and the Middle East, MTN is positioning One TV as a key part of its long-term digital ecosystem strategy.
